So What's Next: Berlin Web Week Will Kick In May (2-9 May 2012)

The German capital has a legendary vivid digital scene. This year its melting pot, the official Berlin Web Week, will come along with a high-five-welcome as it  the 5th annual period! This further edition presents more than a couple of slightly-crowded festivals with excellent line-ups, well-known conventions, open space events, new congresses, geeky night events etc., etc. It will take place from 2nd to 9th May 2012 at various locations within the central urban area of Berlin. Presently, more than 6,000 participants are expected for the main events re:publica and Next Berlin (see below).

We are looking forward to the following main events (in chronological order):

* re: publica 2012 – Will start the festival from 2nd to 4th May, 2012 (– as posted earlier),

* Startup Weekend Berlin – May 4th to 6th, 2012.

* Informare! – New event on digital publishing, featured by major science societies and publishing houses, from May 8th to 10th, 2012.

* Next Berlin 2012 – Will close the festival from 8th to 9th May, 2012.

The Berlin Web Week is again initiated by Medienboard Berlin – Brandenburg and Berlin Partner who as well run the well-known event calendar BerlinWebWeek.de platform on activities and events for the digital community in Berlin.

Julian Assange will keynote International Media Congress of Medienwoche@IFA Berlin 2011 [UPDATED]

Julian Assange, WikiLeaks’s founder and Internet activist, will keynote – live via satellite – the International Media Congress at Medienwoche@IFA, set to start on 5 September 2011 in Berlin, which would bring together experts from internet and media industry as well as consumer electronics.

Assange is well-known as a figurehead and founder of WikiLeaks. Journalist and publisher Assange is announced to contribute his keynote speech looking at the future of the digital public sphere and at global transparency. Assange’s keynote will be broadcasted at the annual congress on 5 September (which is the official Producers Day!) and 6 September taking place as part of Medienwoche@IFA (Media Week @ Internationale Funk-Ausstellung).
Afterwards Julian Assange will be interviewed by Melinda Crane, Chief Political Correspondent of DW – Deutsche Welle TV.

At this year’s congress, representatives of different companies and organizations are expected to discuss topics like

the current challenges faced by content providers and platform operators, caused by changed boundary conditions; new transmission paths and business models; trends and tendencies in media development; the social responsibility of the media in the Internet age and the upcoming course settings for film, media and the Internet.

The integration of innovation, science and research will be a new main theme in 2011.

The International Media Congress event is organized by the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg (hosting as well our crisp role model Berlin Web Week), funded by the Medienanstalt Berlin-Brandenburg and the German federal states of Berlin and Brandenburg.

Assange will keynote about The Future of Digital Publicity, Transparency and What It Means for the World (working titel) on Tuesday, 6 Sep from 10.00 am to 11.00 am.
